Not Conforming, Being Transformed
If you have ever gone spelunking or done a tour of a cavern of some kind, you may have heard that there is such a thing as complete darkness. It is consuming and enveloping. Men who have gotten lost in the depths of the earth where no light can penetrate have become subject to this darkness. They are unable to move without running into things. Many have perished trying to find their way out of the darkness or waiting to be rescued. There are also creatures that live in the depths of caves that have never seen the light. As a result, they have adapted and developed echolocation techniques to find their way around. Yet, they are devoid of any color or of any sight.
Spiritually, we begin our lives in the darkness. We are lost souls in need of a Savior. Without a light in our lives, we will just continue to fall deeper and deeper into the abyss. At some point, we may even become used to the darkness and begin to adapt to the ways of evil. Yet, at that point, we are devoid of true life, real life, abundant life.
Jesus tells us in John 8:12 that He is the light of the world and if we follow Him, we will not find ourselves in darkness. When we find His light, it can guide us out of the darkness, so that we do not have to return. He will lead us into real life, abundant life, a life full and rich, focused on Christ.
However, for time to time, we may find ourselves being drawn back to the cavern of sin. We fall back into the darkness, hitting obstacle after obstacle along the way. It will be a bumpy ride to say the least. But, there is still hope. If you are in the darkness, whether due to never knowing Christ or due to your own backsliding, remember that there is a light to follow that will guide your path. Christ will lead you out of the darkness and into the light of life - if only you will follow.
